My Spend vs. Save list on makeup and skincare

Image from

Being beautiful doesn't mean spending tons of money on expensive skincare and makeup. Don't get me wrong; if you have the moolah, I'd say go for branded makeups. But for those who just started with makeup, I suggest playing around with inexpensive makeups first. That way, you know what colors and textures suits your skincolor and skintype. So in this post, I'll share with you how to save money on some skincare and makeup items.

Skip moisturiser if your skin is really oily, use a refreshing facial mist instead to hydrate and prep your skin before applying skincare and makeup.

Swatch: Mary Kay Creme Lipstick in Pink Melon

Here's another product I got during the Mary Kay Press event a few months ago.
I had a hard time choosing which lipstick shade to try, was eyeing on a red shade but I own a few red shades already from different brands. I wanted a try a coral shade then Hollie recommended I should try this one.

 Mary Kay Creme Lipstick info:
Juicy summer melon drenches the lips with ripe color – just one of so many glamorous shades from the Mary Kay® Creme Lipstick collection. The long-wearing, stay-true color glides on with a lightweight, creamy texture for maximum color impact that lasts. Plus, it won’t feather or bleed. It’s even enhanced with vitamin E and a vitamin C derivative to help ward off wrinkle-causing free radicals. And it's fragrance-free with a hint of vanilla flavor. Perfect for combining with Mary Kay® Lip Liner and NouriShine™ Lip Gloss.
Net. Wt. 0.13oz.
Retails for Php 650.00.

Pink melon is a bright medium coral pink shade that will suit fair to medium skintones.  I immediately fell in love with the shade the first time I've tried it. It was LOVE at first sight!

Here's a quick rundown of the pros and cons:

* affordable
* lightweight, buttery texture
* uber moisturising
* vanilla scented similar to MAC lippies
* non-drying
* elegant packaging

* average staying power, about 3-4 hours then it starts to fade.

*  can't think of any.

Review: E.L.F. Essentials Eyelid Primer

 E.L.F. Eyelid Primer in Sheer (7501)
Product Info from ELF:
* Preps your eyelid for smoother, longer-lasting, crease-proof eyeshadow.
* The ultra-sheer, nude color works to increase eye color longevity.
* Lightweight liquid formula quickly absorbs into skin for comfortable wear.
* Safe, gentle formula.
Php 125.00
Watsons stores
Available in 4 shades.
* affordable
* no eye allergies
* mildly scented
* easy to apply and dries quickly
* a little goes a long way
* prevents my eyeshadow from creasing and fading throughout the day.

* unhygienic; how I wish the packaging is squeeze tube.
*Apply a thin coat to the eyelid and blend in. Allow formula to dry before applying eyeshadow.

I have slightly oily lids and this does a good job of keeping my eyeshadow in place and
prevents it from creasing and fading. Aside from that it also helps with the longevity of my eyeliner as well.

Yes! If you are looking for a decent, inexpensive eye primer I highly recommend this one.

Review: Makeup Academy MUA Lipboom

MUA Lipboom in Bring It

Product Info from MUA UK:
Created with Alexandra Burke by MUA! Lipstick and highlighting gloss that creates fuller curvaceous lips for a dramatic illusion of volume. There are 4 amazing ways to transform your lips and give them some Boom!

PRICE: Php 550.00

Lipstick - 2.5g
Lipgloss - 3g

SHADES: Available in 13 shades.

* my initial impression of the lipstick is that it looks kinda drying, but I'm surprised when I tested it on my lips, it's so creamy and pigmented!
* non-drying
* smells so good! Reminds me of freshly baked cookies =D
* I'm really impressed with the staying power, it lasts for more than 5 hours on my lips (as long as you don't eat anything oily)
* travel-friendly (no need to bring separate lipstick and lipgloss)
* easy to apply

* based on the description it says that the lipstick has a "matte" finish. To me, the texture reminds me of MAC Satin Lipsticks.

* the glitters in the lip gloss are a bit chunky. It is hard to remove and tends to scatter all over your lips when not removed properly.
* the gloss is kinda drying when used alone.

* You can use makeup wipes or ordinary wet wipes to completely remove the lipcolor and lipgloss.
* Moisturise your lips well prior to application.

I love the scent, texture and staying power of this product.
If you are looking for a 2 in 1 product that you can easily carry around, I highly recommend you try this one.

Dr. Jart BB Cream Swatches and Comparison

If you are a follower of this blog, I think you know by now that Dr. Jart BB Cream is my holy grail.
So here's a quick comparison of the Water Fuse, Black Label and Silver Label BB Creams.

I got my Dr. Jart BB Creams at in Hongkong, but I read that they just opened a stall inside SM Megamall (Department store area).

Water Fuse HK $ 295 (Php 1,622)
Black Label HK$ 290 (Php 1,595)
Silver Label HK$ 265(Php 1,457)

Sounds expensive but I got these 50 ml tubes on sale for 20% off.
It's sulit naman coz a tube usually lasts up to 8 months with everyday use.

I made a simple table showing the functions and the coverage of each BB cream, as well as their undertones.

Dr. Jart BB Cream comes only in 1 shade per variant.
Silver Label suits NC20 - NC30.
Black Label suits NC20 - NC35.
Water Fuse suits NC15 - NC40 since the formula is quite sheer.

My favorite still is the Silver Label BB cream, followed by the Black Label variant.
